There are certain types of files that we did not want users uploading
to our BBS's. No matter how many times we displayed a news file, posted
bulletins, told them as a new user, they kept trying to send up these
    files.

So, Tom started the original idea and had a simple merge put together
with extensions "hard coded" into RBBS so when a user tried to upload
a certain file extension it then displayed a file saying, "I don't want
these types of files!" and then it would not let the user upload. I then
took the idea and expanded on it, to have an external file that the SysOp
could decide what types of extensions were to be "locked out", the security
level (like FILESEC) of the user(s) affected, and the file to be displayed
to the user. (Note that this file display code/idea came from Bob Hampton's
excellent UPMSG2.ZIP merge - Thanks Bob!).

First put all the .MRG files in a directory with everything else you'd normally
need to merge or compile RBBS-PC 17.4.

Pick out which merge(s) you'll be using.

Type "DOIT MAIL Y" (without the "") if you'd like to apply the personal mail
    merge and then compile RBBS-PC.

Type "DOIT MAIL N" (again without the "") if you'd like to apply the personal
mail merge and not compile RBBS-PC.

If you will be using more than one of these merges then pick non-compile mode
for the 1st one and pick the compile mode for the last merge.

For instance - DOIT MAIL N .... then DOIT ENTR N ... then DOIT DESC Y

In fact, you can use DOIT.BAT for any merges actually simply by replacing NTKE
    with the merge name.

This merge is known to run when compiled with QB3.0. Any other compilers ....
well .. you're pretty much on your own.

    Date: 11/20/92 - v1.0 - first release
    Date: 11/23/92 - v1.1 - fix to allow lower case in NOEXT.DEF

This small modification permits the SysOp to make a list and define file types
by extension which he/she does not want uploaded to their board. Some SysOps
do not want other archive types, or certain file types to be uploaded to their
BBS. An example would be if users were uploading large amounts of Adult
oriented GIF's and the SysOp did not want them. The SysOp need only to place
the GIF extension in the NOEXT.DEF file and the BBS will check the extension
of the file before accepting it. If the file had the extension GIF, the BBS
would tell the user that the file type is not "accepted here" and cycle back
without permitting the user to upload the file.

The BBS will check for the existance of the file NOEXT.DEF and, if found, read
in the file extensions the SysOp wants rejected. The SysOp must create this
file. It must be a pure ASCII file with no control codes of the type created
by word processors. A good file for this is QEDIT. You place the file
extensions, one to a line, in this file. A sample NOEXT.DEF is included as
an example. This file MUST reside in the RBBS directory (where your
    RBBS-PC.EXE is located).

One drawback to RBBS is that the sysop can only incorporate 4 colors in
his text files using Smart Text. This merge was developed in order to
increase the numbers of colors available to the sysop from 4 to 8. This
allows for many color combinations which tend to liven up drab text files.

After searching for a merge to accomplish this feat, I came across a merge
by Jeff Ward, which, while it worked, was totally unacceptable to me.
The reasons were that a sysop may not want to hard code the merge changes
into the code himself, and that in doing so, he has to hard code WHERE he
wants to use the additional colors which may prohibit further merges to the
code that might have worked had he not changed the code. Hence, COLR174.

COLR174 is a set of merges which will allow additional smart text characters
to change the color of text as it is presented to the user. RBBS allows
smart text characters C1, C2, C3 and C4 for the sysop to control this color.
These merges also allow characters C5, C6, C7 and C8.

                             THE SHORELINE BBS
                                301-946-2771

Merge Name : Not Enough Download Time
    Date : 8/23/92
    Original Idea : Dan Shore
    Programming : Dan Shore
    Documentation : Dan Shore

    History:
    ---------
When a user is on the BBS and they try to download files and they don't
have enough time to do so, the only entry that is listed to the CALLERS
file is: Not enough time, had xxx need yyy. While this is adequte to
know that the user tried to download more files then they had time for
the SysOp does not know what files they tried to download. Why is this
important. Well, most users that don't have enough time to download
files usually will call back with another name to get the files (that is
if your BBS does not have callback verification or some sort of way
    to prevent this).

This merge will add to your CALLERS file the name of each file that the
user tried to download when they did not have enough time to do so. The
entry with the merge will now look like this:

FILENAME.ZIP Not enough time, Had XXXX Need YYYY

    How to apply the merge:
    -----------------------
    I. To apply the merges (RSB5TIME.MRG) you will need BLED 2.2,
RBBS-PC 17.4/0704 code, and your favorite QB compiler.

The batch file TIMEMRG.BAT is supplied to assist you in adding
        the code with BLED.

If you are running modified RBBS, I suggest that you cut the merges
in by hand and not with BLED to make sure no conflicts exist.

MOD TO CREATE DOOR.SYS FILE FROM RBBS 17.4

Mod started by numerous authors - Eddie Rowe, Dan Drinnon, maybe
others. Final bug fixes by Gary Huff.

Lots of door authors today are making their doors compatible with
lots of BBS software, but there is a drive on to make all of them
compatible with the 52-line DOOR.SYS file. This door control
format brings some uniformity between various BBS door control
files, and appears to be the emerging standard for control of
doors. Thus, you might pick up a file somewhere that is
compatible with some weird piece of BBS software - but it's also
compatible with DOOR.SYS. (At least, that's the idea among door
    authors today.)

If you can create a good 52-line DOOR.SYS file, you will discover
lots of door software out there written for strange BBS's that
you can suddenly run on RBBS with no other converter necessary!
Or, you may find a door written for, say, some obscure BBS called
WEIRDO BBS, and you can't find a DORINFOx.DEF to WEIRDO.DEF file,
but you CAN find a DOOR.SYS to WEIRDO.DEF file converter that the
WEIRDO author wrote. Thus, you can run WEIRDO BBS's exciting
door game, GERIATRIC MUTANT NINJA AARDVARKS, or whatever door you
might have a compulsion to try.

One of my users wanted me to write a merge in order to show who the last user
was on his MENU0 screen. I obliged him and decided that maybe there are other
SysOps who might want the same feature. Hence, the LAST174 mod. This is a
very simple mod to install and my recommendation is to install by hand using
an ASCII editor like QEDIT. I have included a batch file to install the mod
using Ken Goosens BLED v2.2. Use this batch if you are certain that you have
not installed any mods which access the same line numbers. Have fun!

Mail Check Mod for RBBS v17.4a

    Date: 10/19/92 - v1.0 initial release

A few of my users asked for this one. They were tired of people signing onto
their boards and bypassing the mail check when queried by RBBS. With this mod,
the SysOp can control whether a security level will automatically have their
mail scanned or will be prompted and, optionally, bypass the mail scan.

This mod requires a new parameter be added to the PASSWRDS file. This would be
the last parameter added (14th) and would be a 0 to allow the security level to
be prompted for a mail scan at sign on or 1 to force the mail scan at sign on.

This mod is very short and my recommendation is to install by hand. You can
also install this mod using Ken Goosens BLED v2.2. A batch file is included
to assist you using BLED. If you have any other mods installed which access
the same line numbers you MUST install this mod by hand.

THE CHANGES ARE FOR RBBS 17.4, BUT they will also work for 17.3C - The
RSB5MENU.MRG file is NOT needed for 17.3C, Simply change line 822 of
RBBS-PC.BAS to LOCATE 24,1,1 instead of LOCATE 24,1. All the other MRG
files are needed for both versions. It goes without saying that you must
use the included MENU0 or design your own...

The MENU mod is my solution to get rid of that same old MENU0 that we
all have been looking at for I don't know HOW LONG!

    What it does:
1). constantly updates the TIME in the Upper Right Corner!
2). no more Flashing YES for "READY FOR CALLS"
3). Start time since last Recycle on top of screen.
4). Put's the "CONNECT..." just below the "RING"
5). Does not display DEBUG YES/NO.
       6). Turns Off Screen Blanking
       7). looks pretty.

MAILFIX is a purge/repair utility for RBBS-PC message bases. It was
originally written by Chip Morrow and released as part of the MAIL MANAGER
offline mail door for RBBS-PC, but because of its obvious utility for all
RBBS sysops, whether running MAIL MANAGER or not, we are releasing it as a
       separate stand-alone utility.

Version 4.0 was largely rewritten by Doug Wilson to run much faster than
previous releases, and has a few more useful options than previous
       versions.

    ============

I wrote this mod to enable my callers to view what has been marked for
Downloading ONLY when their time does not allow them to DL the files
they already MARKED for downloading. My callers suggested that I
display what has been marked along with Filesize or DL time so that
they can make a better decision on what to download, and what to leave
out. I will enhance this feature in the near future.

    NAMER 2.0 (a/k/a, NamerPro)
By Dave Lartigue and Kurt Schwind
    January 15, 1993

First off, an apology and an explanation. Although I wrote this
program, I didn't create it. The original NAMER program I got a long time ago.
I don't know who wrote it, but I really liked it. Then I lost my copy of it,
and I couldn't find anyone who had it, so I decided to re-create it. My
apologies and thanks go out to whoever wrote the original. Please try and
    contact me!
After I had a basic program written, Anna helped me stuff the NAMER.DAT
file with cool words, Kurt helped expand the program past my original vision,
and Rebecca supported my geek habit the whole time. Thanks to all of them!

    WHAT IS NAMER?

I call a lot of Bulletin Board Systems that allow "aliases" or
"handles". Although I like the anonymity and fun that this can allow, I notice
that some people have trouble coming up with a good alias. They either choose
a character from a book or movie (Captain Kirk, Doctor Who, Neuromancer) or
they choose something ridiculously common (The Black Knight, Super Hacker,
Dark Ninja). I prefer originality, and that's why I like Namer.

       What's changed w/v0.82a:

          1. A "pure" mode has been added that doesn't embed control
information in the RBBS *M.DEF file. Previously, packages like
Silver Express and MegaMail refused to work with OverMail. By adding
the letter 'U' to the options list for a given message area, these
          packages will now function properly.

If you switch to this mode, messages imported after the option is
added will be in this form. If you want all of your old messages to
be in the "pure" form, use R2FC with the /RESCAN option, add the 'U'
to OVERMAIL.CFG, and then run F2RC.

Note: Using this option disables the /RESCAN command line switch for
          a given area.

Also Note: If you never use /RESCAN, the "pure" mode will make your
          RBBS *M.DEF files somewhat smaller.

          2. Zones. Add a zone number to your net/node number in
OVERMAIL.CFG, and it'll show up in your tag line, i.e.

          * Origin: The BimboBoard, Hoboken NJ (8:345/6789)

Also, the zone and point fields are set in the *.MSG now.
Interestingly enough, these fields occupy the space previously used
by the Opus-only date_written and date_arrived fields. Hmmmm.

          3. A bug with the import of message dates has been squashed. I
          think...

When a user uploads a file and selects Extended Description, this merge
will kick in. It alters the text prompting the user for the extended
description. Tells user how many lines they will get to enter the
extended description. Reminds them of the portion of the description
that they have entered so far, as line #1 of the File Description.
Following lines for description begin with the #2 and so on from there.

This merge is especially helpful to those running RBBS-PC systems that

    Date : 8/29/92
    Original Idea : Tom Hansen

Documentation : Dan Shore & Tom Hansen

    History:
    ---------
During the testing of the View Merge that we wrote, Tom found out that
viewing of Personal Files was not working correctly. So, Tom set out
on the task of the original programming of this merge and between Tom
and I, we got the viewing of Personal Files working.

Note that if you include your Personal Files as part of your FFS system
this merge is not needed. Having your personal files in your FFS is not
the "proper" way to it set up, but each SysOp does it their own way, as
RBBS allows. Not having them in your FFS is just our opinion.

    How to apply the merge:
    -----------------------
    I. To apply the merges (RSB3PRVW.MRG & RSB4PRVW.MRG) you will need
BLED 2.2, RBBS-PC 17.4/0704 code, and your favorite QB compiler.

The batch file VWCKMRG.BAT is supplied to assist you in adding
        the code with BLED.

If you are running modified RBBS, I suggest that you cut the merges
in by hand and not with BLED to make sure no conflicts exist.

    RSB4PRVW.MRG - RBBSSUB4 merge (Modification of ROTOSDIR)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Final Note:
    -----------

With all the latest "hoopla" about distributing other folks code either
modified or not, we are releasing this to the RBBS world to do with as
they please. If you use it in your merges, either modified or not, all
we ask is for recognition that we (both Tom and myself) originally wrote
the merges. Short, sweet, simple and in the "True Spirit" of RBBS-PC.

Date: 7-9-92 v1.1 - Added code change to display "searching" to user
Date: 7-22-92 v1.2 - Disabled ability to search/match to SysOp secret name
Date: 7-29-92 v1.3 - Fix for personal uploads

Have you ever been on a BBS and wanted to send a message to someone and
forgot or didn't know how to spell their name? This merge gives a user
the ability to enter a search string as short as 2 characters whereby all
names which contain this search string will be displayed. The user will be
prompted with each name whether this is the person he/she wishes to send a
    message to.

    *******************************************************************************
                                 July 9th, 1992
The modification now notifies the user that it is "searching for a match"
so that the user does not think the program has halted when searching
    large users files.
    *******************************************************************************

    *******************************************************************************
                                 July 22, 1992
Till now, the mod had the ability to make a match to the SysOps Secret Name!
This was brought to my attention by another SysOp who feared a hacker might
use this ability to find out the name. RBBS itself allowed a match to the
secret name which could allow a user to verify that the name is being used on
the BBS. Both of these bugs have now been eliminated. A user can not send
a message to the SysOps secret name, and the name will not appear as one of
the match choices if it matches the search string.
    *******************************************************************************

    *******************************************************************************
                                 July 29, 1992
The mod did not set the file receivers record number when doing personal
uploads. This led to the receiver not being notified that there was new files
waiting for him/her. This has now been fixed so you can search for a users
name doing personal uploads in the same manner as entering messages.
    *******************************************************************************

This merge was originally written by Dan Drinnon for the Maple Street code.
Further modifications were requried to fix some minor problems in execution
of the code. In addition to searching the users file for a string and
displaying users names which contain the string, I have added the ability
to abort the search when quiried and disabled the entering of a blank
space as the first character of the search string. This gives the user the
ability to abort as each name is shown. Prior to this change, the only way to
abort was to answer "yes" (to send a message to the person shown) and then

This small merge to RBBS 17.4 will allow you to have smarttext colors in

is PRINTed to the local screen and com port, and not processed thru the
    smarttext subroutine.

I had a problem a while back whereby a young CoSysOp of mine captured my users
file for his conference and started calling up my board and various other
boards with other users names and passwords. Needless to say, this caused
a few problems. I have since done two things. First and foremost, I have
taken away the users file privilege from all my CoSysops. I am the only person
with access to those files now.

Second, I wanted to install a merge to require all my users to change their
passwords on a regular basis. This way, if my security were compromised again,
I'd know that within a set number of log ins my users would have new passwords.
From this was born the PSWD174 merge files. The routine here is to require
every user to change their password at a SysOp specified amount of log ins.
They cannot reuse the existing password when they are prompted for a new
    password.

The SysOp specifies the number of log ins permitted before the required
password change with a new parameter in the Passwords file specified in
CONFIG parameter 146. The existing RBBS passwords file contains 13 parameters,
each separated with a comma. You must now add a 14th parameter which
specifies the number of log ins at which the user must change his or her
password. The format is as follows:

When forwarding a message in RBBS, it places the ">" character to signify
the lines quoted by the previous person. As a message thread is created
by forwarding the messages back and forth, more of these silly characters
are added to the lines causing, to me, a very sloppy appearance, and
making it difficult for others who read these messages to determine who
    said what.

This merge was originally conceived by Gary Glueckert of the SUNY BBS. He
forwarded to me some code to look at and try since his wife was giving
birth to his son, and the college where his computer is located was closed
    for the holiday week.

His original code needed some modification to compensate for the word wrap
feature in RBBS. In addition, the original code still had RBBS adding the
">" characters along with the quoted persons initials. I felt this was
unnecessary since the initials are there to begin with.

This is a very simple modification to the RBBS source code and as always, my
advice is to install this modificatin by hand if you have installed any other
merges which use these line numbers. If no other merges have modified these
line numbers then you may use Ken Goosens BLED v2.2 to install the
modifications. There is an enclosed batch file to perform this for you.
There are no additional variables to be added to the RBBS-VAR.BAS file with
    this merge.

Why? Well, because I didn't know enough to get RCHAT400 working
along with Tom Collins' Ansied editor, the most popular MOD for
my users. Also because John Taylor of Indiana On-Line (tm) in

in the RBBS RelayNet conference regarding CHAT MODS and the desire
to have mods that worked easily for them. I place myself in the
category of the ignorant in that I didn't know enough to get

RBBS Hack Report Helper is a simple utility which will read in the Hack
Report's data files and write just the files to an output file (does NOT
write the comment lines). I needed something to automate the process of
updating my HACK.DEF so this small utility was put together to assist me.

(HACK.DEF is a file which RBBS (Cellar merge version) will read when a user
uploads, and if the file they are trying to upload is contained in the Hack
Report, RBBS takes action to prevent it from being uploaded.)

RBBS Hack Report Helper relies on other utilities I already use daily to

While working on the RBBS .ASM files I noticed a function named RBBSDOS which,
either was in use before and abandoned, or never was incorporated in RBBS. The
routine was written by D. Thomas Mack and it's purpose was/is to get the
version of DOS that RBBS is being run under. Since I like to display as much
about the system that my BBS is being run on as possible, I figured I'd write
a small routine to get and display this information. While doing so, I wrote
another small assembly routine called RBBSDESQ to determine if RBBS is being run
under DESQview and, if so, return the version number for display. Hence this
mod. It is a small mod, and involves changes to the RBBS source code, and the
addition of another .OBJ file to be included at link time.

The first merge adds a special notification to the caller that his/her time

TOSS 1.0 Beta Copyright 1992 Jim Storch
    =============                                       =========================

       What does TOSS do?

Imports .QWK message packets into RBBS message bases.

Exports .REP message packets from RBBS message bases.

Why would I want to do that?

This will allow you to "netmail" your BBS's conferences with
            those of another BBS.

       How?

Simple, the "hub" can be any BBS (even non-rbbs) that has
            a QWK compatible mail door!

Use TOSS to export your messages into a .REP packet. Call your
host, download a .QWK packet, then upload your .REP packet.
Then, use TOSS again to import the host's .QWK packet into
            your message bases.

Any number of "nodes" can be served by the same hub. You can
easily create a small network of local BBS's.

How can I automate the transfer?

TOSS will run from a batch file. You will need a communications
program capable of running script files. Create a script to call
your host and access his mail door. Then, use TOSS and the script
in your daily maintenance batch file. Your script or batch file
should be set up to detect when there is no file to IMPORT or
upload. TOSS does not mind an empty .QWK, so don't fret that.

UPMSG2.MRG - merge to display message file to uploaders

RBBS-PC (c)1992 by Thomas Mack, Ken Goosens, Jon Martin, and Doug Azzarito
    QuickBASIC (c)1988 by Microsoft Corp.

It seems that no matter how well you initially lay out the rules
you want people to adhere to when uploading files to your BBS, it seems
that many users need additional reminders to know whether or not you
allow such things as X-rated files, get-rich schemes, and the like.

After many hours spent deleting unwanted uploads, and sending reminder
messages to users, I decided it might be beneficial if RBBS would just
display a brief file summarizing the upload rules whenever a user requested
to upload a file. I have therefore come up with this quick little merge
to the RBBSSUB5.BAS file that others may find useful.

The merge works by looking for a text file called "UPMSG.HLP", which
must be located in the same directory as your other help files, as
specified by RBBS 17.4 config parameter 64. It should be noted that
screen pauses have been disabled, since I did not want RBBS to display
    the message:

             "* Ctrl-K(^K) / ^X aborts. ^S suspends ^Q resumes *"

when displaying this little message file to the uploader. It also means
that you should keep your upload message short, so that it does not scroll
off the screen before getting to the "Upload what file(s)? " prompt.

NEW!! - version 2 supports graphics files as well using standard RBBS
format of adding a 'G' or 'C' to the filename, such as "UPMSGC.HLP".

Enclosed in this .ZIP distribution, you should find the following files:

UPMSG2.TXT - what you are reading
UPMSG2.MRG - the merge file, in BLED format
UPMSG2.BAT - the batch file to merge and compile
UPMSG.HLP - sample text file to display - no graphics
        UPMSGG.HLP - " " " " " - IBM extended-ASCII graphics
        UPMSGC.HLP - " " " " " - ANSI color graphics

Just make sure that you have the pertinent files, including RBBSSUB5.BAS,
BLED.EXE, and your BASIC compiler (QB.EXE, BC.EXE. or BASCOM.EXE) in the same
directory before running UPMSG2.BAT. You must also have whatever library
your BASIC compiler needs (i.e. - BCOMxx.LIB for QuickBASIC).

A program to toggle the RTS line in doors

                                      by
                                   Bob Eyer
                                 [73230,2620]

                                  Nov 4, 1990

         Syntax:

         RTS [port]

where port may be either 1 or 2. If port is not entered on the
commandline, or if any number other than 1 or 2 is entered, RTS
         defaults port to 1.

This program toggles the logic status of the RTS line, without
altering the DTR line, and deals directly with standard IBM
hardware modem control registers for ports 1 or 2. It does not
open or close the communications port. RTS 2.0 may executed any
number of times without sending invalid data to the modem control
register, and will not stay resident in memory. Consequently, use
of this program does not reduce free space available for a
         specific door program.

If RTS is low, this program will set it high; if high it will set
the level to low. RTS will not provide any video output, as it is
designed to be invoked from a batch file which controls the
processing of a specific door program - so that the remote user is
not aware of its operation. Therefore, the Sysop must use some
other indicator program to determine the actual status of the RTS
line, such as RS232.COM - or the RS light on the host modem.

         General Discussion:
         ------------------
Have you found a door program which, when accessed through shell
or exit doors of RBBS, simply hangs remote video? This may be the
         program which solves your problem.

Although this routine was not written by me, I have been working
on it, and is now much improved. This program, is invoked AFTER
a user drops down into CTTY, they type NEWHOST. This immediately
switches ALL control of the computer to a share of the host cons
ole, and the on-line user. In other words, the host console is
always echoing what is echoed to the modem. This allows CHATS, &
you can check and make sure they aren't doing anything fishy.
Experiment alittle. This program also gives you alittle more fre
edom of running programs, whereas, CTTY only lets you perform th
e DOS functions. If you use this program with RBBS-PC, be sure &
merge in the NEWHOST.MRG file so that the BBS automaticaly invok
es the program when option 12 on the Sysop menu is selected.

Have you found a door program which, when accessed through shell
or exit doors of RBBS, simply hangs remote video? This may be the
         program which solves your problem.

Most door programs don't have RTS/CTS problems when executed
through the shell or exit routines of RBBS. This is due to the
fact that most door programs, particularly those which are written
in BASIC, will reopen the communications port in such a way as to
         raise the RTS line.

However, some host programs may, under certain conditions, lower
the RTS line when dropping to DOS for a door application, even
         where DTR is unaffected.

Setting the RTS line at logic low means that programs which reopen
the communications port without correcting this problem will not
send any information. Typically, such programs will be written in
a language, such as Pascal or C, which don't make any assumptions
about how the port should be opened; and some authors forget that
not all host programs allow doors to pick the RTS logic off the
         host's settings.
